Glucosamine is a naturally occuring amino sugar that is a vital component of the articular cartilage in the body. It is essential for the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, and hyaluronic acid, which are macromolecules that comprise cartilage, and it is important for maintaining the elasticity, strength and resilience of cartilage in joints. Glucosamine helps to build, maintain and repair the cartilage, tendons and ligaments in the joints and it is involved in the formation and maintenance of the synovial fluid in the joints, which is necessary for lubricating the joints and to assist in shock absorption.
